TELSTAR 1 GROUPING A good grouping of Telstar 1 signed items includes: S.P. 10"" x 8"" b/w a newspaper photo bearing an artist's view of the satellite signed by DR. JOHN R. PIERCE Bell Laboratories Project Manager and EUGENE F. O'NEILL engineer who headed the group which designed and developed Telstar who also dates the photo ""Tuesday July 10 [1962] Andover Me."". ALSO: an S.P. 8"" x 10"" b/w a newspaper photo showing the lift-off of the rocket carrying Telstar 1 signed by Goddard Space Flight Center Director HARRY J. GOETT and by Telstar Project Manager CHARLES P. SMITH with transmittal letter on NASA letterhead Sep. 7 1962 signed by Goett ALSO: an S.P. 8"" x 10"" b/w a newspaper photo showing Bell Telephone Chairman FREDERICK KAPPEL as he was seen on a television signal relayed by Telstar while speaking to Vice President Lyndon Johnson. Kappel pens the text of part of his conversation and signs: ""...The call is being relayed from out Telstar satellite...How do you hear me Mr. Vice President?...""; ALSO: two Bell pamphlets promoting the satellite and a postcard bearing a sample of the plastic radome cover used at the Andover Me. Bell facility. Overall fine. Telstar 1 was launched on top of a Thor-Delta rocket on July 10 1962. It successfully relayed through space the first television pictures telephone calls fax images and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. It remains in orbit.
