Description
Engravings on paper. Set of six. Printed circa 1773 and represent a portion of the figural depictions of the Colona Trajani (The Trajan's Column), which was erected in The Eternal City at the beginning of the II century A.D. (time of Trajan's rule) to celebrate the Emperor's military victories, which led to the greatest ever territorial expansion and might of Rome. Scenes from the Roman wars against Barbarians in consecutive order - numbers 101 through 106 - a total of 6 gravures. These were part of an extraordinary series of thousands of engravings to cover all battle scenes sculpted on the column. This was an enormous task and the finest artists, engravers and print-makers of the period were involved. Fine detail.
