Item Details

Description

Pair of steel engravings, hand tinted with watercolors. Done by the studio of the prominent 19th c. engravers Karl Ludwig Frommel (German, 1789–1863) & Henry Winkles (English, 1801–1860), who started to work together after Frommel's visit to London in 1824. Display scenes from two picturesque towns in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany - Bingen am Rhein and Cochem. The Bingen scene is inscribed in the lower right margin - Frommel & Winkles sculp. and on the left – cez.v.C.Frommel. The Cochem scene is inscribed only on the lower right - H.Winkles scu. Very strong colors, which are original to the engravings. Note the plate marks and margins. Both are framed in modern metal frames. First half of the 1800's. Measurements: Approx. 16.25" x 12.25" framed, each scene is about 5.25" x 4" and 9" x 6" inside the plate marks

Condition

The Cochem print is missing the glass and there are some scuffs on the paper, non obtrusive to the scene. Age staining, mostly seen on the Bingen scene
