Good condition
Impressive icon presumably assembles the family saints of the patron
Provenance: Cyprus private collection
The present icon bears the Cyrillic maker’s mark of Antip Kuzmichev and was made in Moscow in 1882. It reveals five saints, who have no canonical relation between each other. This suggests that they were privately selected by the patron, thus indicating that they were family saints or saints with whom the patron had a special connection. Portrayed in the foreground are the Sts. Symeon and Anna the Prophetess, both related to the event of the Presentation of Christ to the Temple, together with St. John the Theologian. They are flanked by two monastic saints in the background, Sts. Peter and Fedronia. Above, there is an image of the Mother of God Iverskaya. The icon is complemented by an opulent silver-gilt oklad, decorated with stylized decoration on the border and with crosses in raised medallions on the corners. The wooden panel is covered on the reverse with a piece of velvet fabric that bears a hand-written inscription, partly illegible.
The icon is in good condition considering the age. The painted surface bears minor scratches, which resulted probably from the contact of the oklad with the wood. The layer of varnish, which was originally applied on the oklad, seems to have been discoloured and it will possibly benefit from professional cleaning. The oklad is in an excellent condition considering its age. The panel measures 31.5 x 16.7 cm. (cbo)
