Marked on front silver cover with master’s mark ‘?.A.’ (unidentified master I.A., 1847-1850), assay master’s mark ‘A.P. 1889’ (unidentifiable assay master A.R., 1889-1894), fineness ‘84’ and Moscow city mark St. George fighting the dragon; all other silver mounts also at least once marked with the fineness ‘84’

Church Slavonic work with finely minted silver covers

This is a Russian church Slavonic work dating to the late 19th century. The cover is lined in dark green velvet and reliefed silver applications decorate the front in large and the back in the center and in the corners. The front silver cover depicts in an oval cartouche haloed Christ’s resurrection. In the corners are portraits of four Evangelists with attributes. The front cover is richly adorned with Byzantine ornamentation in fine mint. The verso silver applications depict in the center in an octagonal star the cross of the Russian-Orthodox Church. In the corners are octagonal acanthus leaf stars, all also surrounded by rich Byzantine ornamentation.



The front cover is marked with the master’s mark ‘?.A.’ (unidentified master I.A., 1847-1850), the assay master’s mark ‘A.P. 1889’ (unidentifiable assay master A.R., 1889-1894), the fineness ‘84’ and the Moscow city mark St. George fighting the dragon. All other silver mounts are also marked at least once with the fineness ‘84’. The church book is in good condition with slight traces of use. The paper is browned and shows partially foxing. The dimensions of the cover are 23.5 x 17.5 x 5 cm. (tm)
