Shanks & Co, Magasin Anglais (est. 1852)

James Steuart Shanks founded the fashion and jewelry shop ‘Shanks & Bolin, Magasin Anglais’ together with Henrik Conrad Bolin in Moscow in 1852. James was a British merchant living in Moscow and Henrik was the younger brother of Carl Edvard Bolin, a St. Petersburg jeweler of the House of Bolin. Silver pieces were commissioned from the silversmith workshops of Maria Ivanova Linke. After Henrik passed away in 1888, the jewelry division of Shanks & Bolin was sold to Bolin and the shop was then renamed Shanks & Co, Magasins Anglais. (tm)
