30 stiff cards, each with a mounted sheet containing 6 woodcut illustrations of animals, the names in type within each image. Cards overall 7.5x11.5 cm (3x4½"). Housed in a custom box "Spelling Cards" in gilt on box spine.
An unusual and rare series of cards for children, likely used as an aid in spelling instruction. Publisher unidentified but likely published in London in the first third of the 19th century. All areas of the animal kingdom are covered, mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, marine life, etc.

Foxing and light wear; very good.
