Description
Engraved by William Satchwell Leney (British, 1769-1831) after the painting by William Hogarth (British, 1697-1764) of 1739. "Charity in the Cellar", engraving, published circa 1822. Engraving depicts four male gentlemen drinking wine and spirits in a cellar with empty bottles strewn across the floor and a fifth man sleeping on a cot behind the group. Inscribed below image lower left "Hogarth Pinx" and lower right "Leney Sculp". Framed approximately 24.75" x 26.5, sight size 14.25" x 16".
Condition
Engraving has not been laid down. Scattered areas of foxing and mild toning. It has been cut down on bottom edge and sides. Some losses to corners and rips to top edge.
