Description
Germany, 20th century. A collection of six German tankards or bier steins, each having a metal hinged lid, comprising of a Simon Peter Gerz stoneware tankard with hand painted decoration in earth tones of a leprechaun handing a flower to a nude child within a landscape scene, marked to underside with impressed maker's mark and painted "Germany", approximately 9.75" tall; a tan earthenware stein with painted decoration in relief of a carnival scene at Munchen Oktoberfest with a building inscribed "Lowenbrau" at center behind a horse drawn carriage with wooden kegs of beer, approximately 9.25" tall; an Original Thewalt stoneware stein, circa 1970-85, with cobalt glaze on a grey ground depicting a figural scene in relief of a group around a sculpture of a Roman woman flanked by Karl Marx and Ferdinand Lassalle (as a lion), marked to underside "Limited Edition of 5000" and "West Germany", approximately 9 5/8" tall; a Domex transferware tankard with figural scenes and a crown atop the hinged lid, approximately 10" tall; an Original Thewalt porcelain tankard wtih three cartouches around body, each holding decoration in painted relief of famous buildings in Berlin, with a fragment of the felled Berlin wall to top of lid, marked to underside "Limited Edition of 5000", approximately 11" tall; and a Domex limited edition (114/500) porcelain hand painted stein with decoration in blues and white of a tall ship within a circular cartouche, marked to underside, approximately 8" tall.
