Description
"Rubiaiyat of Omar Kayyam" translated by Edward FitzGerald, illustrations by Willy Pogany, published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company, New York, New York. Leather bound edition with gold and black illustration plates, color plates and ornate decoration black on large sheets. Book measures approximately 10.25" x 8" x 0.75". Note: The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that the translator of this work, Edward FitzGerald (English,1809-1883) provided for a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (Persian, 1048–1131), a poet, mathematician and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), meaning "quatrains".
