English, Late 19th century. C.A. Tomkins after Frank Feller (Swiss, 1848-1908), "The Last Eleven at Maiwand", published London, England in 1884 by Henry Graves & Co. Hand colored engraving depicting the Battle of Maiwand on July 27, 1880. Image with a British contingent in foreground with white dog ducking behind cover and holding their ground as the Afghan military on horseback attack. Framed approximately 37.75" x 47.75". Sight size approximately 23.5" x 33.5". Note:The Battle of Maiwand was one of the principal battles of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Under the leadership of Ayub Khan, the Afghans defeated two brigades of British and Indian troops under Brigadier-General George Burrows.
