Description
China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE – 220 CE. This lead glazed censer has a separable top depicting a forest scene populated with animals and a boshan magic or sacred mountain. The lid in high three dimensional molded relief is mounted with a bird. The Chinese of this era liked to use realistic landscape representation. The base is a plain bowl, hollow stem and saucer with wonderful iridescence on the green glaze. Fine iridescent surface! Size: 9"H x 8-1/2"D.
A very similar burner was found in the group of Eastern Han tombs at Zhangwan, Lingbao County, Henan Province; see "Wenwu", 1975, #10, p.89, fig. 30. Ref. "Spirit of Han - Ceramics for the After-Life" published by the Southeast Asia Ceramics Society, 1991, pg. 129. Also "Seeking Immortality - Chinese Tomb Sculpture from the Schloss Collection, Janet Baker, The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, Santa Ana, CA., 1996.
Provenance: Acquired in the early 70’s by the present owner from an old French collection.

Excellent condition with two small chips on exterior of bottom edge of top and one minor firing chip on the inside rim which is out of sight when the cover is on
