April 1865 President Abraham Lincoln Assassination Letter “Republicans and Democrats are all in mourning…”
April 27, 1865-Dated Abraham Lincoln Assassination, Autograph Letter Signed, “Tho(mas) Irwin Hughes,” upon stationary of Hughes & Stegman, Government Claims Attorneys, New York City, With Original Stamped Envelope, Choice Very Fine.
April 27, 1865-Dated (less than 2 weeks from Lincoln’s death) this Letter is written to his business partner Lewis Stegman. Well written, upon thin paper with very minor tears into letter at creases, with some expected wear shown to cover. This historic personal letter reporting, in part:

"Republicans and Democrats are all in mourning for the murder of our constitutionally elected President. You know I never was his friend politically but he was the President." A line by "Stanley" at the top of the letter adds: "How are you. Thos. J. Hughes, he went to bury our President."

Together with its original Stamped Postal Cover addressed to Major Stegman, 1st Reg., First Army Corps, Washington, D.C. Hughes' partner, Lewis R. Stegman, enlisted on 9/30/1861 at New York City, as a 22-year old Captain. On 3/5/1862 he was commissioned into "E" Co. NY 102nd Infantry. He would be discharged on 10/24/1864, having received multiple wounds in battle (Wounded 8/9/1862 Cedar Mountain, VA; Wounded 7/3/1863 Gettysburg, PA; Wounded 11/27/1863 Ringgold, GA; Wounded 6/15/1864 Pine Mountain, GA). Stegman was promoted to Major on 2/12/1864. (2 items).
