Vermont Coppers
1785 Vermont Landscape Type “Vermonts” Holed Possibly to be Worn as a Celebratory Badge or Decoration
370851226447 1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape Type. “Vermonts.” Ryder-2. Holed at top. Extremely Fine.
103.8 grns. This 1785 Vermont Copper is a vastly above average, having excellent centering and strike for the grade, with full strong date prominent. This coin has been carefully and obviously holed at top through the “S’ of VERMONTS, likely an indication that the wearer wanted the State name to read properly as “VERMONT.” One very plausible reason for it to have been holed in this fashion may have been to be able to wear it on display. In 1791, Vermont became the 14th State of the United States. In celebration of that extremely historic event, the carefully located hole may have been placed so it could be worn. Certainly no one can be certain of the full story behind this impressive coin, yet its use in connection with that historic event seems quite logical. The color of this Landscape type Vermont Copper is a lovely and natural, medium chestnut. Its surfaces are remarkably smooth and defect free, having sharp details and great eye appeal. This coin also appears to have been specifically hand-selected for its impressive display characteristics and superior eye appeal.
