Description
Indian Peace Medals
Original Silver “James Madison” Indian Peace Medal in Choice Very Fine, ANACS Certified & Exceedingly Rare
1809-Dated, James Madison Indian Peace Medal, Medium Size, Struck in Silver, Choice Very Fine.
Julian IP-6. Belden-21. Prucha-40. 62 mm. Medium Size. Struck in Silver at the United States Mint. This extremely rare, Original of this historic Indian Peace Medal was actually presented to a Native American Indian Chief as evidenced by the suspension hole at top for a loop, and only some light scattered wear marks that it has acquired over years of actual use. It is well struck showing excellent detail for its grade. There is a lovely natural rich silver-gray even tone with faint blue overtones adding to its significant eye appeal. The surfaces are pleasing with sharp rims and has no significant defects. In the past we’ve offered two bronze versions of this medal in the 62 mm size. This is the very first Silver metal version of this medal we’ve offered of any size!

It is of the greatest rarity because most of these were buried along with their recipients, or they have been passed down from one generation to the next, remaining tightly held by the descendants or were placed in museums. Indian Peace medals were used by the U.S. government to pacify the Indians, cement relationships and treaties, and to ratify the leadership of the Chiefs. They are among the most popular and desirable medals on all of numismatics and the rare, silver versions are the most eagerly sought after. The only more recent sales we could find for this medal were in Stack’s Ford XVI Sale of October 2006, in which a lower quality example graded About Very Fine sold for $23,000; a Fine went for $19,550. and a lesser Fine brought $18,400. An exceptional opportunity to acquire a significant piece of American history that appears excellent for display. Accompanied by a Photograph tied Certificate of Authenticity from the American Numismatic Association Authentication Bureau.
