Description
"Buddha", Cambodia, Ayudhaya Period, 18th Century, sandstone, 16 x 12 inches.
His face carved with serene expression, slightly arched eyebrows, above formerly inlaid eyes, aquiline nose, smiling lips, broken elongated ear lobes, curled hairdress and ushnisha. Forceful and gracefully carved, this is One (1) of the finest examples of a large sandstone Buddha Head from the region, the sensitively styled and finely detailed facial features, elegantly arched brows, the hair arranged in rows of tight curls, with a few remains of lacquer in recessed areas.
Similar to the Sandstone Buddha Head which rests appropriately in the climbing roots of a Bodhi tree in the grounds of Wat Mahathat ("Temple of the Great Relic") in Thailand, this is a magnificent example of the sculpture from Cambodia.
