Biography: Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Griffith Coale was a painter who studied art in Munich, Paris, Italy and Spain. Returning to the United States, he studied with Leon Kroll and John Sloan. He earned a widespread reputation for mural work as well as painting, and in August 1941, was commissioned into the US Naval Reserve as Lieutenant Commander and became part of the Combat Artist Program. He was the Navy's first combat artist on active duty and spent six and one-half years in the Navy. He witnessed and recorded action in every ocean including the Battle of Midway.After the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, he went there and gathered materials for a mural commemorating the event.Retiring from the Navy, he moved to a home and studio in Stoningham, Connecticut but only lived there five years before his unexpected death in 1950 at age 60.Exhibition venues included the Art Institute of Chicago and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC.
