History:
Nunzio Vayana, (1878-1960) painter, etcher, sculptor, teacher, photographer and lecturer was born in Castelvetrano, Italy August 28, 1878 and died in December, 1960. He studied with Grosso, Morelli and Pisani and was Founder and Director of the Palm Beach Art Center, Florida; Founder and Director of the Ogunquit Art Center, Maine; and President of the Artist Club of Hartford, Connecticut. He was also a member of The Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; Society of Connecticut Artists; Springfield Art League; American Federation of Arts; Gloucester Art Society; Venetian Art Club, Venice, Italy; American Art Club, Paris, France; International Art Society, Rome, Italy; Archaeological Institute, Rome, Italy; National Association American Prof. Artists; Palm Beach Art League, (Hon. Member); Daytona Beach Art League,(Hon. Member); Ridge Art Association, Florida (Hon. Member); & Royal Society of Arts, London, England. Awards included Venice Art Club, Selective Prize, 1921; Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Popular Prize,1924; International Exhibition in Rome, Honorary Mention, 1925; Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, William Gedney Bunce Prize, 1926; & several others.He is listed as a major figure in the Florida Lost Colony Artists of Saint Augustine. His paintings are in a numerous private, public and corporate collections both here and abroad.Submitted December 2004 by Arthur Garrity of Hingham, Maine.
