Since the 1970’s Ed Baynard has been creating floral still lifes, inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. This Japanese iris is highly stylized, in a cool and subdued palette. A blue butterfly flies towards the blooms, which are resting in a Surrealist-inspired vase, taking this interior still life into the exterior world.
Executed in 2006, this watercolor is signed and dated on the recto, and signed, titled, inscribed and dated in ink, verso. With full margins, the word measures 40 x 30 inches. In overall good condition with no stains, tears or repairs but with pin-holes in the upper corners, done by the artist.
Ed Baynard (American, 1940)
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1940, Ed Baynard has been continually inspired by Japanese woodblock imagery and American modernism. His first exhibition was in 1971 at the legendary Willard Gallery. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, Tate Gallery, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Walker Art Center, and The High Museum, among others. Ed Baynard lives and works in New York.
