Similar in compositional structure, these six etchings and aquatints are centered with sculptural half-length figure in frontal view framed by variegated modular color fields and numerous symbols covered in vigorous hatchmarks. Interested in seriality, semiotics, and “nomadic” art which travels across the geographic, technical, creative, and temporal territories of art, Mimmo Paladino has been known to draw inspiration from religious, ancient, and tribal art. The enigmatic forms in these works connote Christian reliquaries with themes of death and sacrifice.

Executed in 2001, these etchings and aquatints on wove paper are each signed, dated and numbered fifty-seven from an edition of hundred. Printed for the ‘Mathematica Portfolio’ series, the works have full margins and are framed and matted. The sheets measure 22 x 30 inches. In overall very good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs.

Mimmo Paladino (Italian, b. 1948)

Born Domenico Paladino in southern Italy, Mimmo Paladino played in pivotal role in reviving interest in painting at the end of the 1970’s when minimalism and conceptualism pervaded the art world. He was also one of the leading artists of the neo-expressionist Italian Transavantgarde movement in the 1980’s. His paintings, sculptures, and prints hold iconography suggestive of religious themes and ancient classicism. With numerous retrospectives at institutions like the Kunstmuseum Basel and Guggenheim, Paladino is internationally represented in collections like Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Galleries of Scotland, Tate Gallery, and Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.
