Description
DESCRIPTION: Georg Arnold-Grabone (German, 1896-1982). Oil on canvas. Scene of two saddled horses standing in front of mountains. Signed in lower left corner "Arnold Grabone". Label on back of canvas in German. In gold painted and gessoed frame with light texture. Born in Munich, German in 1896, Grabone studied at the Munich Art Academy. He served the German Army during World War I but was discharged following an injury sustained from a grenade explosion. While recovering he studied at formally in Stuttgart and Cubism in Vienna. He was awarded a gold medal in Vienna in 1928 for his work Hardanger Fjord. In 1932, he moved to Zurich to teach at an art academy where he later became its Rector. He taught Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower while he was in Europe, one of his paintings subsequently hung in the White House. Grabone developed a relationship with Winston Churchill through Eisenhower and gave him several lessons during the 1950s. MEASUREMENTS: 30-3/4" x 27". Overall with frame 36-3/4" x 33". CONDITION: Toning throughout. Rubbing to portion of top center. Some areas of canvas showing through paint, due to application of paint. Some chipped losses to paint. Rubbing, scratching, losses to frame.
