Description
Da zdravstvuyet XXIV godovshina Krasnoy Armii [Long Live the United Front of the Freedom-Loving Peoples!], a poster by Viktor Ivanov (1909–1968, Meritorious Art Worker of the Russian Federation), and Olga Burova (1911–?). Published by Iskusstvo, Moscow–Leningrad, 1942. 88 x 59 cm.
This poster was prompted by the announcement of new treaties between the Soviet Union and its Western allies in May–June 1942.
Viktor Ivanov started producing posters in 1931, while still a student at the Leningrad VKhUTEIN/State Arts Academy. Before the war he pursued the film artist career, and even received an art director credit for the important film Lenin in 1918 (1939). With the start of WWII, Ivanov again turned to poster graphics. His work in this genre earned him two State Prizes, one of those for his works of the war–time period. We cannot provide much information about Olga Burova, except that imprints of Ivanov’s 1940s posters, even posters signed in-plate by Ivanov alone, often list her as a co-author. Clearly, she was regularly called on to convert Ivanov’s designs into a finished product.
