Beautiful French Empire commode with exceptionally large figural mounts and superior quality veneer

This commode is attributed to the French cabinetmaker Charles-Joseph Lemarchand, who was working as ‘maître ébéniste’ in Paris from 1789. The purist form and clean lines are typical of his works from this period. The noble wood is also one of his characteristic design features. A comparable piece of furniture with similarly elaborate figural fittings is a bonheur-du-jour dating to circa 1805 (see ill.: Marie-Noelle de Grandry, Le Mobilier Francais. Directoire, Consultat, Empire, 1996, p. 81).

The piece on offer here features a simple carcass over a rectangular base with a ‘bleu turquin’ marble top. The two-door front is flanked by two columns with fire-gilt repoussé and chased bronze sheathed bases and capitals and centered by a high fitting in the shape of bulrush, which elegantly accommodates the keyhole. The doors are bronze mounted with large representations of Greek gods, depicting Ares and Aphrodite. A fire-gilt bronze frieze with a cartouche depicting Psyche holding a lamp and a dagger over a sleeping Cupid in the center. The interior features four open drawers. A key is enclosed.

The dresser is in very good restored condition. The wood is a little fades, especially along the upper section. The upper edges of the plinth with a small notch. The interior with some scratches and minor nicks. The fittings with minor, inconspicuous tears. The dimensions are 92 x 127 x 57 cm. (tfa)
