Description
Southern Louisiana Creole Carved Walnut Armoire, 18th c. and later, the curved corner stepped crown over double inset panel doors with short iron fiche hinges centered by a fluted carved stile opening to interior shelves and a belt of three drawers with a serpentine scalloped skirt, flanked by curved stiles and inset panel sides, on cabriole legs joined by a serpentine scalloped skirt, H.- 72 in., W.- 50 1/2 in., D.- 21 in. Note: This Armoire came from a local Faubourg Marigny estate. The home is believed to be one of the original homes built by Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville when building the “subdivision” on his family plantation in the early 19th c. While it is impossible to say if the piece was original to the house, it sat in the parlor of the primarily untouched main house where there was still no electricity or running water.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. Crown is observed with a ¼ inch loss to lacquer or veneer at right center. Doors are observed with some small losses along edges, and moderate nicks and scratches throughout. Both center panels are observed with slight vertical separations. Left door is observed with repairs to the top right and bottom left corners, and a repair is noted along the bottom edge. Right door is seen with repairs to the top left corner, and along the hinges on the right side. Both doors are observed with separations through the center panels on the interior, with butterfly repairs noted. Small areas of brown fill residue are observed throughout interior side of doors. Interior shelves are unfinished, and interior drawers pull easily. Both side panels are seen with deeper vertical scratches throughout. Feet are observed with nicks and scratches, and some small losses to the base. Front right foot is seen with some slight separations, and vertical lines of old worm damage. Finish varies throughout piece, with a possible later lacquer having been applied. A nice example.
