Item Details
Description
12 collotypes from Eadward Muybridge’s “Animal Locomotion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements” [Phila: University of Pennsylvania, 1887.] Lower margin of each: "Copyright 1887, by Eadweard Muybridge. All rights reserved." Muybridge first photographed a horse with all 4 hooves off the ground in 1872, after Leland Stanford (later Governor of California) hired him to determine whether a horse leaves the ground completely when running, a hotly debated issue at the time. (Stanford believed they did, and Muybridge won Stanford a $25,000 bet.) From 1872-1885, Muybridge accumulated over 20,000 photographic negatives, or 781 sequential series of photo-plates, shot from multiple cameras at carefully planned locations and angles, each of which showed a human and/or animal engaged in a continuous motion, leading him to develop cameras for faster shutter closure. Muybridge and his collaborator, H. Allen (a physiology professor at the University of Pennsylvania) published 37 eleven-volume sets which contained a collotype of every one of the 781 photographic series. [Grolier, Truthful Lens, 123.] 3 other editions of Animal Locomotion were then issued: An edition of 100 collotypes selected by the subscriber, an edition of 50 collotypes, and an edition of 21 selected by Muybridge. Most of the collotypes here are not among those selected for the edition of 21, which means they are likely from the edition of 50 or 100. Outer edge of sheets: 18 7/8” x 23 7/8”. The condition of the margins varies, as does the condition of the cream-colored area between the margin and the reproduced photographs. Photo-illustrations are mostly near fine. Plate numbers and images: ++ 684. A buck walking. Consists of a series of 16 frames, half showing the deer from the side, and the lower row from behind. Minor dampstain in margin at upper right, slightly overlapping cream-colored area between margin and images. Short tear near center of right edge of sheet, slight discoloration to edges. ++ 183. Woman crawling. 36 frames, various angles. Nude to show muscle movements (as is true of 4 others listed below). Chipping to upper and right margins, short tear at center of left margin. Minor dust/finger soiling to margins and cream colored area, focal points of image near fine. Stain to left portion of verso. ++ 694. Buck moving across an enclosure. 8 frames above show a side view. 12 smaller frames below show the deer from behind. Margins discolored, slight dust-soiling to cream-colored area, image near fine. Institutional rubber stamp on lower portion of verso. ++ 622. Horse and jockey, trotting. 24 frames. Upper margin chipped (including a 1-inch loss at upper left). Foxing, dust-soiling to margin and cream-colored area, discoloration to upper portion and right margin. ++ 159. Male athlete leaping over an imaginary hurdle. 24 frames total. Upper and lower row show different scenes, in both cases, jumping an imaginary hurdle. Dampstaining and dust-spoiling overlapping most of image. Fingerstains and blemishes elsewhere. Rubber stamp near center of verso’s lower edge. ++ 60. Man running. 20 frames total, with upper row showing him from side, and lower row from front. Right margin’s lower half has a loss extending about 1 inch from edge. Upper margin has creases and smaller chips. Slight dust-soiling to margins and cream-colored area. ++ 646. A man about to break a tree branch. 24 frames. Foxing to margins and cream-colored areas. Discoloration within an inch of upper and lower edges and a smaller area near left and right edges. Lower edge of verso has rubber stamp. ++ 689. Deer running through a fenced-in field. 16 frames. Light dampstain to upper right (margin and cream-colored area), margins show slight dust-soiling, otherwise very good. ++ 690. Six deer moving through a fenced-in field. 12 frames. Some finger-soiling, slight discoloration to sheet’s edges, very good. ++ Plate 603. Man on a horse. Series of 20 images. Loss to right margin. Other margins have foxing and discoloration. Minor finger-soiling to margins and cream-colored area. ++ 645. Horse and rider jumping a hurdle. 8 shots from the side and in front, 8 shots from behind. Foxing to margins, slightly affecting the cream-colored area, between margin and images. Discoloration to upper and left edge. ++ 646. Separate set of 25 frames showing a horse and rider jumping a hurdle, half from front, half from behind. Lower margin’s right half has losses. Dust-soiling to margins, trace of foxing near right edge.
