12 collotypes from Eadward Muybridge’s “Animal Locomotion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements” [Phila: University of Pennsylvania, 1887.] Lower margin of each: "Copyright 1887, by Eadweard Muybridge. Muybridge first photographed a horse with all 4 hooves off the ground in 1872, after Leland Stanford (later Governor of California) hired him to determine whether a horse leaves the ground completely when running, a hotly debated issue at the time. (Stanford believed they did, and Muybridge won Stanford a $25,000 bet.) From 1872-1885, Muybridge accumulated over 20,000 photographic negatives, or 781 sequential series of photo-plates, shot from multiple cameras at carefully planned locations and angles, each of which showed a human and/or animal engaged in a continuous motion, leading him to develop cameras for faster shutter closure. Muybridge and his collaborator, H. Allen (a physiology professor at the University of Pennsylvania) published 37 eleven-volume sets which contained a collotype of every one of the 781 photographic series. [Grolier, Truthful Lens, 123.] 3 other editions of Animal Locomotion were then issued: An edition of 100 collotypes selected by the subscriber, an edition of 50 collotypes, and an edition of 21 selected by Muybridge. Most of the collotypes here are not among those selected for the edition of 21, which means they are likely from the edition of 50 or 100. Outer edge of sheets: 18 7/8” x 23 7/8”. The condition of the margins varies, as does the condition of the cream-colored area between the margin and the reproduced photographs. Photo-illustrations are mostly near fine.
