Item Details
Description
[Presidents] Guest Book, probably from an embassy in Washington, D.C., containing over 200 signatures incl. those of 11 Presidents (McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Coolidge, Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Hoover and Nixon); 3 Vice Presidents (Fairbanks, Thomas Marshall, and Charles Dawes); Supreme Court Justices (Gray and Charles E. Hughes, Frank Kellogg, A. W. Mellon); Cabinet members (John Hay, Elihu Root, John W. Griggs, Philander Knox, Charles Emory Smith, E.A. Hitchcock, James A. Wilson, L. J. Gage, Willam McAdoo, Robert Lansing, Bainbridge Colby, D. F. Houston, Newton Baker), numerous Austro-Hungarian, German, Mexican, French, Swiss, Swedish, and other foreign diplomats; entertainers; musicians; aviators (Lindbergh, Byrd, Costes, and Bellonte); and other notables. Military officers include Lt.-Gen. Nelson Miles, George Dewey and B. J. Lamberton, Gen. Pershing, Adolphus Greeley, and Lucius Clay. Inside of front cover has the address label of the owner, Frank Sobotka. Upper right of rear endpaper and verso of front free endpaper have his rubber stamp. Sobotka was born 1879 in Austria, and died in Maryland in 1973 and according to a 1910 DC census, was employed at a Washington Embassy, and possibly the French Embassy. The signatures on any given page are separated by a pencil rule. Below (or in some cases above) any given signature is a note and ink date, usually in pencil or occasionally ink. The notation which appears under the signature of Manuel C. Tellez (59th unnumbered page) is “Ambassador of Mexico since assumption of good relations.” Tellez left office in 1931, suggesting that Sobotka began putting in his notes before that time. With 4 exceptions, all signatures appear directly on the leaves of the guest book. 3 are mounted signature cards (British PM Ramsay MacDonald, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and U. S. Grant 3rd), and 1 is a cut signature (Lucius D. Clay). A list of signatures is available upon request.
