Orig dark green cloth lettered/decorated in black and gilt. Pale peach endpapers. Spine ends and corners frayed with minor loss. Text nearly separated from inside of spine. Ffep and half title loose. Some fingerstaining to heliotype frontis’s margins (overlapping type but not image). Occasional marginal tear. 1st edition. Several locations in Huckleberry Finn have 2 (or even 3) different states. This is a first edition with a mixture of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd state characteristics. Full title leaf is in the 2nd of the 3 states (“1884” copyright notice, not conjugate with leaf [1][7]); the 1st state of the title leaf is almost never observed. Page 13 is 1st state (listing the illustration “Him and another man” as being on page 88). Page 57 is 1st state (“…with the was…” 11th line from bottom). Page 143, line 7 is 1st state (“b” in “body” is in broken type, see McBride, p93). Page number “155” is 3rd state (the 2nd digit "5" is slightly larger than the first). Page 161 is 1st state (signature [11] omitted). Page 283’s illustration is 3rd state (Silas Phelps’ pants have a vertical fly line). Leaf [23][8] is 2nd state (not pasted under rear endpaper). Heliotype frontis is in the 1st of the 3 states (with “From the Bust of Karl Gerhardt,” but without the addition of “Karl Gerhardt, Sc., with the tablecloth clearly visible, and with “Heliotype printing Co.”).
