Description
ATTRIB. FRIEDRICH VON AMERLING, AUSTRIAN OIL ON CANVAS, MID 19TH C., 24" X 20", COUNTESS JULIA HUNYADY DE KETHELY:Attributed to Friedrich von Amerling (Austrian, 1803-1887), a bust-length portrait of a young woman in a diaphanous dress with a daisy at the center. No apparent signature, in a gilt wood and gesso frame of the period with hand-written note in German, dated December 1929, on the reverse (see additional photo), identifying the sitter as Countess Julia Hunyady de Kethely (1831-1919), a Hungarian noblewoman and the Princess consort of Serbia as the wife of Mihailo Obrenovic III; she later married Duke Karl von Arenberg, Prince von Recklinghausen, after Obrenovic's assassination in 1868.
Condition
An octagonal canvas with red preparer's label, Vienna (see additional photo). Chs (Very well done. As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: c. 2% overpainting in background with 1 dot of overpainting on her right eye lid; not lined or patched; 2 very small nicks in the paint in the background of the UL; some edge of the painting scarification; antique gilt frame with chips.
