Fine Polished Mollusk Shell with Original Carved Chinese Base. The Mollusk shell, typically called a Bailer for bailing water, is likely Chinese as it rests in the original carved rosewood Chinese fitted stand or base. From the estate of Royal Toner (1894-1959) of Southold, NY. The shell and base are in good condition. The shell measures 12 inches long and 8.5 inches wide and 6.8 inches high including the base. Royal Toner was one of the most famous oystermen from Eastern Long Island. He was president of the Greenport Oyster Company and of Lester & Toner, Inc.. Mr. Toner also headed the NATIONAL SHELLFISHERIES ASSOCIATION.
