Description
GERMAN PORCELAIN REGIMENTAL BEER STEIN, hand-painted polychrome decoration, .5L size, depicting a scene of battle and a "Bivouak" (sic) camp scene flanking the handle, and heraldic device flanked by the unit roster to the front, dated 1894 to 1899. Below the rim are the words "Es lebe hoch das Regiment, das lich Victoria Melita nennt" or "Long live the Regiment, named the Victoria Melita", for "Inf. Leib Rgt. No. 117, Mainz", or 117th Life Infantry, 3rd Grand Ducal Hessian, garrisoned in Mainz, and named for Grand Duchess Victoria Melita; with hinged pewter lid with figural soldier finial and domestic scene lithophane under base. Fourth quarter 19th century. 11" HOA.

Excellent condition overall, except figural finial, intact but compressed into the lid slightly.
