Attributed to John Russell, RA (British, 1745-1806) Portrait of three Anstey brothers, presumably Christopher, John and probably Arthur, in a Library, all standing half-length oil on canvas 74 x 62cm (29 x 24in)
Condition
Relined and cleaned, bright gilt frame. Prominent age craquelure and drying cracks which have been retouched. Abrasion around edges of painting in varnish layer. Frame has been regilded. John is buried at Trumpington - JOHN ANSTEY ESQUIRE SECOND SON OF THE LATE CHRISTOPHER ANSTEY ESQRE AND ONE OF H.M. COMMISSIONERS FOR AUDITING PUBLIC ACCOUNTS. WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE THE 25TH OF NOVEMBER 1819 AGED 62 YEARS TIMO A TENDER HUSBAND, A MOST ANXIOUS AND AFFECTIONATE FATHER, A FRIEND BELOVED FOR HIS UNASSUMING VIRTUES A POET ADMIRED FOR HIS ELEGANT WIT AND INOFFENSIVE SATIRE A SCHOLAR ESTEEMED FOR HIS POLITE ACQUIREMENTS, SOUND JUDGMENT, AND CLASSICAL TASTE THIS TABLET IS INSCRIBED BY HIS AFFLICTED WIFE AND GRATEFUL CHILDREN
