On quite rough weave canvas and perhaps a little dirty. Paint layer in a stable condition. Unusual surface coating/varnish which has dried in small, dark islands across the surface. It is unclear whether this surface coating has been applied to intentionally give the painting an aged look, or if a resinous layer has been applied at some stage in the painting's history which has dried in an unusual manner. Unusual scattered retouchings in background and sitter's neck.
