Typical romantic city view of the major architectural and vedutas painter
Cornelis Springer is known for his harmonious depiction of light and colors, exemplified in the present painting of a barge on a Rhine harbor. The scene features a great love for detail in the architecture as well as an elaborate lighting, which bathes the landscape in a warm afterglow. Springer has only vaguely indicated the figures, which speaks for his specialization in the painting of architectures.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition, showing some fine craquelure and partly slight discoloration due to age. The examination under UV light reveals a tiny area of retouching in the right part and major touch-ups to the left part and the left margin. The frame shows slight signs of wear. The size of the painting is 39.5 x 51 cm, and the frame measures 53 x 65 cm.
Cornelis Springer (1817-1891)
Born in Amsterdam, Cornelis Springer was trained with the painter Andries de Wit (1768-1842). He also learned the depiction of perspective architectural views from his brother, the architect Henry Springer. He then studied with Jacobus van der Stok, Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate and Kaspar Karsen. Springer made numerous trips throughout Europe, especially to Germany. In 1863, he traveled to Bremen. Views of cities and villages were Springer’s most favorite subjects. (cko)
