Jan Baptist Lambrechts was a successful Antwerp artist and specialized in genre painting; his small-scale tavern scenes fetch up to €9,100 at international auctions
Jan Baptist Lambrechts was highly appreciated for his fine brushwork and ambitions for detailed compositions. His preferred motifs included cooks, maids, vegetable salesmen, dancing farmers and also drinkers, as seen here in the present painting which has been attributed to the artist. The work impresses with its fine fabrics, the portrait-like features of the figures and details such as the clay jugs, the napkin on the table and the small light effects on the glasses.
Condition:
The panel shows light marks along the edges, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of old retouchings. The painting is however in good overall condition. The panel measures 24.7 x 20.9 cm.
Jan Baptist Lambrechts (1680-c.1731)
Jan Baptist Lambrechts was born in Antwerp. In 1703 he spent some time in Lille, which was followed by years of travelling. When he returned to Antwerp in 1709, he established himself as a master of genre painting. It is known that he left his hometown in 1731, shortly before his death. Examples of his artistic output can be found in the Uffizi in Florence and also appear on the international art market. (cbo)
