Description
19th century, Qing dynasty. A recumbent ram or horned sheep with one leg slightly raised, with beard and two ribbed horns. The character for ram, yang, is half the character for auspicious, xiang, therefore sheep and rams are considered to be auspicious animals, as well as being the eighth animal of the Chinese Zodiac, and an emblem of a retired life. On a wooden stand. With a few small natural inclusions. Approx. 1 1/4 by 2 1/4 in., 3 by 5.7 cm.
