Early 20th century AD. An archaistic statuette of a sitar-player in tight-fitting costume, on a rectangular base with flowers and foliage to the front edge. Thai figure of an Apsara, a female spirit of the clouds and water in Hinduism and Buddhism. The Apsaras play musical instruments and dance in the heavenly realms of the gods or are often depicted throwing flowers over Hindu gods or Buddhist figures. They are also associated with good fortune and fertility. 2.6 kg, 36 cm (14 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired in the 1970s.
