20th century AD. A rectangular paper panel on a fabric backing with wooden roller; black panel with seated robed figure on a red flower emerging from water, the head framed by a gold-coloured nimbus; column of calligraphic text and single red chop seal; attributed to Chen Shaomei. The painting depicts the Buddhist Bodhisattva and goddess, Kwan Yin. The goddess has thirty three forms, and this one depicts her seated on a lotus of pure knowledge that arises from the turbulent waters of everyday existence. The name Kwan Yin means She who perceives the cries of the world. 392 grams, overall: 196 x 50cm, panel: 66 x 30cm (77 x 19 3/4"). Ex Li collection; acquired in the 1990s. [No Reserve]
