Description
20th century AD. A mixed group of cast brass vajra miniatures comprising: one with a cage of eight bars to each end, conical spike and fabric-bound middle; one with a cage of eight scrolled bars to each end, conical spike; two with a cage of four bars to each end, each bar issuing from a beast's mouth. The Vajra, or thunderbolt sceptre has an unclear and distant origin which are mainly employed in Tantric Buddhism to dispel evil forces and symbolize the victorious power of knowledge over ignorance. They can have different numbers of points from one to nine, which carry esoteric meaning in Buddhist rituals. 437 grams total, 8.5 - 11.5cm (3 1/4 - 4 1/2").
