Description
20th century AD. A carved wooden mask with keeled dome, round-section rear loop, square beak, lentoid eye and square nose detail above, pierced at the edge for attachment; mounted on a custom-made stand. The Mambila are a people of modern Nigeria and Cameroon who are mostly farmers and stockbreeders. Mambila art centers upon an association called suaga. It is primarily concerned with justice and supernatural cleansing within the community. They are known for their stylized animal masks that share characteristics with the neighbouring Senufo people. Masks and statues are kept hidden from the eyes of women in a net hung on the inside of a hut that was on stilts and is guarded by the head of the family. 805 grams, 36.5cm including stand (14 1/4"). Ex Lincolnshire, UK, collection; acquired London, 2000s; from Cameroon, central Africa. [No Reserve]
