Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Wari / Huari culture, ca. 500-1000 CE. This face vessel of burnished redware represents a deity's or shaman's head with bulging eyes and prominent teeth painted in white slip on red ground. He dons a helmet adorned with white circular motifs painted at regularly spaced intervals around the rim of the jar above a white line. Just above the figure's nose is a beak-like upside down triangle painted in white slip. So perhaps the shaman is donning a bird mask. 5.25"W x 3.50"H (13.34 W x 8.89 H cm)
