Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE - 300 CE. A touching rendition of a Colima mother and child, hand built in terracotta. The mom sits on her knees and holds her child to her chest with both hands as the child playfully holds both hands to her mouth. Both figures are elaborately decorated with applied, incised, and red and black painted details. Both figures don headdresses with bands incised with a net motif, nose rings, ear ornaments, and red and black striations perhaps indicating body paint, tattoos, or jewelry. The mother figure is particularly stately, with wide shoulders characteristic of Colima figural sculpture, a nude upper body, scarification on her shoulders, a red headdress and a full red skirt. Nice overall composition. 4 1/2" (11.5 cm) H x 3-1/2" (9 cm) W
