Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Jamacoaque culture, ca. 500 CE. Large polychrome mold-made terracotta whistle in the form of a female figure painted with red, black, tan, white, and pale blue slip; adorned with traditional helmet-shaped headdress, ear ornaments, striped body paint on legs, and red possibly clothed torso. She holds a flute-like instrument, across her chest over her right shoulder. Quite apropos given that the piece, with its four sound holes and blow hole, is a wind instrument as well. 10"H (25.5 cm)
Provenance: Ex-J. Gonzalez private collection, Pennsylvania, acquired in 1980s.
