Item Details

Description

Italian School, likely 20th century. A pair of cast bronze figural sculptures depicting Bacchanalian male and female figures, each in a standing position in a state of draped nudity, the male being Dionysus (aka Bacchus in Roman mythology), the god of wine and fertility, holding a wine goblet in raised left hand and staff topped with pinecone in his right hand, wearing a fox skin pelt around his backside, the female being a Maenad (aka Bassarid in Roman mythology), a follower of Dionysus, wearing an ivy wreath around her head and holding a bunch of grapes in her extended right hand. Both figures are presented on cylindrical bronze pedestals set upon square bronze plinths. Apparently unsigned. Each approximately 12 1/4" x 3 3/8" x 3 1/8".
