Item Details
Description
This pair of antique brass pocket doors belonged to The United States Assay Office in lower Manhattan, the last public gold refinery in the country. (The fortress and its contents were sold in the early 1980s.) These pocket doors once gaurded more than four thousand pounds of confiscated Nazi gold and more than 100,000 twenty-eight pound gold bars. Strong and sturdy, weighing approximately 1500 lbs each, they survived a 1920 anarchist bombing of the building. Their design, which employs a bold heaviness, speaks of the doors’ important function. Each door is H 110" x W 44" x D 3"
