Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757)
Matthäus Seutter began an apprenticeship at the publisher Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg and worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff after he had returned to Augsburg. Around 1707 he started his own printing shop and publishing house, where he produced and released large quantities of maps, city plans, genealogical diagrams and other motifs. He also produced a globe couple (earth- and celestial globe). He made many maps after models from other cartographers, they differed only in terms of their artistic endowment with lavish baroque cartouches and allegoric scenes. After his death, Seutter's widow sold one half of the business to Matthäus Seutter's son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter and the other half to the also related art publisher Johann Michael Probst. On a large number of the maps they had acquired in 1762 they replaced Seutter's name with their own names.
