Urbis Romae Sciographia ex Antiquis Monumentis Accuratiss Delineata Descrizione (Study of the Ruins and Monuments of Ancient Rome)
Engraved map with later hand coloring, mounted on linen
A monumental plan of Rome, first published by Francesco Villamena in 1574, then by de Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi between 1649 and 1691. This wonderful reconstruction of ancient Rome was engraved by Stephanus (Etienne) Du Perac after a detailed archaeological survey by Pirro Ligorio (c. 1510 -1583), who was then superintendant of the ancient monuments in Rome. The dedication, to Charles IX, king of France, explains that the map was the fruit of fifteen years of study of the ruins and monuments of ancient Rome and of related literary texts.
