London, circa 1800-01, the domed lid crested by a banded urn finial and straight gadrooned shoulder having an engraved heraldic device of a regardant lion and serpent with the words: 'audentior ito' (proceed boldly), thebody with similar gadrooning and two lion masks grasping loose bail handles in their mouths, all supported by four flat column-form legs ending in lion feet and resting on an incurved platform on four ballfeet, with original burner, total wgt.: 135 toz , h. 17 w. 11 in., marks on lid, body, platform and burner, makers mark unidentified ('WJ'), with a fitted 19th Century wooden box, with initials 'W.R.' on the door, andwith a plaque reading: Best & Co., 64A South Audley Street, W.
