Roerich, in the present drawing middle-aged with a long beard, also worked as a costume and set designer and became known to a broad public through his activity as a librettist and decorator for Stravinsky's ballet ‘The Rite of Spring’ in St. Petersburg in 1913.

Léon Bakst (1866-1924)

From 1883, Léon Bakst studied art at the Imperial Russian Academy of Grodno, Russia. In 1893, he moved to Paris, where he met a group of young artists, including Alexander Benois, Sergei Diaghilev and Valentin Serov. Together they founded the magazine ‘Mir iskusstva’ [World of Art] in 1898. Besides being active as a painter, Bakst worked as an illustrator for the magazine and as a costume designer and stage decorator. Today, works by Bakst are on display in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. (cko)
