Paul Indrek Kostabi’s artistic output is characterized by diversity and includes not only traditional techniques, but also street art, which often results from his performances. His well-known expressionist self-portraits seem to be inspired by Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Giles Lyon. Other paintings reveal, however, finely executed landscapes and still lifes, but also completely abstract compositions. The present painting is titled ‘A rough ride with a bright side’ and shows an enigmatic constellation of two faceless figures. The style unveils comic-like tendencies, which are typical for a number of paintings by the artist.

The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘KOSTABI 2000’. It is verso also signed, titled and dated with black felt tip ‘Indrek Kostabi. A rough ride with a bright side. 2000‘ as well as fitted with further notes and a small sketch. The painting is in good condition; the paint surface is slightly rubbed on the right side and shows scattered areas of faint craquelure. The size of the stretcher is 77 x 61 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 80.5 x 65.5 cm.

Paul Indrek Kostabi (geb. 1962)

Paul Indrek Kostabi was born in Whittier, California. In the early 1980s he was discovered as a painter in New York and has been active as an artist, musician, music producer and audio engineer, ever since. As a painter he does not follow a specific style. His expressionistic self-portraits may be regarded as the only constant in his entire oeuvre. Kostabi’s works were first presented in New York's Lower East Side and have since been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Examples of his artistic output are included in famous museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museion in Bolzano and the Paterson Museum in New Jersey. (cbo)
