This painting by Hans Platschek shows the typical abstract visual language of the Art Informel, an art movement that was formed around 1945 in Paris with the intention to stand out from the prevailing geometric abstraction. The critic Michel Tapié spoke for the first time of the ‘significance of the formless’ and thus determined the term ‘L’art Informel’. Our painting was on view at Platschek’s first exhibition in the prestigious Galerie Van de Loo in Munich in 1957, which specialized in abstract art.
